Sunday 20th May saw the Hassocks Hawks U10’s compete in the Henfield Tournament where they were runners up in the U9’s age group last year.
This year they were in Group C of 3 groups of 6, 18 teams in total. The first game they narrowly lost to a familiar Upper Beeding side, the only team to beat them this season, which left the Hawks needing to win all their remaining four group games to progress into the semi finals.
The Hawks won their next game with a last gasp belter from Bruno Cina in the last few seconds of a competitive match against Broadbridge Heath. This set the Hawks on their way to win against their remaining group opposition – Patcham (3-0), Hurst colts (5-0) and Henfield (5-0).
Having progressed into the semi finals as the best scoring 2nd place team they again faced Upper Beeding. The Hawks ensured history was not to repeat itself and with two quick goals from Alfie Lewis and a strike from Lucas Lee saw the Hawks progress to the final 3-0.
In the final the Hawks faced an Athletico Burgess Hill side in a repeat of the U9 final last year where Athletico won 1-0 scoring a penalty.
The match was tough a tough one with the Hawks closer to scoring but there was no goals in the game. Six minutes of extra time was played in a very tense final, with a hundred or so spectators watching the teams but they still could not be separated so penalties it was…!!
All six on the field of play had to take a penalty, and after the first round of six penalties the score was 4-4 with calm Hawks shooting from Lucas Lee, Lonny Bone, Bruno Cina and Amitai Paz. It then went to sudden death and Athletico Burgess Hill scored. Lucas Lee stepped up to take his second penalty and slotted it home with a true calmness.
At 5-5 Athletico took their penalty and Amitai Paz saved it! After the ref indicated that the Hawks had won they started celebrating. It was pandemonium but Athletico correctly pointed out that Hassocks still had to score a penalty to win.
The field had to be cleared of spectators, officials and coaches whilst Lonny Bone had to compose himself, having already celebrated winning the tournament, and try and win it for the Hawks. It was the most tense penalty I can remember witnessing to decide a game
Lonny looked surprisingly calm as he ran up and slotted the ball into the left corner of the net and the Hawks had won 6-5…!!
An amazing day for all involved, and the Hawks continue to be a wonderful team that I am very proud of, adding the Henfield Tournament Win to their Horsham Cup Competition Win last month
Well done to the Hawks: Lucas Lee, Lonny Bone, Amitai Paz, Theo French, Bruno Cina, Bailey Sheppard, Kai Chiwome and Alfie Lewis
